Where do you see yourself in 5 Years?

The dreaded interview question which nowadays is seen by many to be outdated. The chances are your interviewer is asking you questions to try to understand how well you plan ahead and where you want to go in order to ascertain whether or not you are right for the position.

It is estimated that those with a future plan are 33% more likely to be able to plan ahead and reach their goals. It is this understanding that makes a candidate that bit more attractive to the recruiter.

This isn’t just about getting the right job for you though – do you have a 5-year plan? Do you know where you want to be in that time and how you are going to get there? Or are you just kind of winging it?! If you are, chances are you might be feeling demotivated, disillusioned and unfulfilled.

If you have a career, a family, hobbies, hopes and dreams you are leading a fulfilling and busy lifestyle…but how often do you sit down and assess whether or not what you are doing is right for you and how sustainable it all is?

Perhaps you have never thought about doing your own 5 Year Plan or you don’t know where to begin. Let’s think about the advantages of having a plan (that can be a short-term plan, a 5-year plan, a 10-year plan or even more – you are not restricted in any way!)

  • focus on what are your priorities in life

  • prioritise better and perhaps say no to things that won’t help you reach your goal

  • know what you have to change and how you prioritise those changes without trying to do too much all at once

  • create balance in your life knowing that you don’t have to do everything at once

  • stop being reactive and only dealing with whatever comes your way – it helps you to be prepared for all situations that could arise

  • find the motivation to get where you want to go

  • see where you are going and what you have achieved – this should give you an immense feeling of satisfaction and fosters self confidence

  • You are more likely to achieve what you want in life if you are planning how to get there!

What do you need to think about?

  1. You need to understand what your potential goals could be, both personal and professional;

  2. What are your short-term vs long term goals;

  3. Which are your priorities?

  4. How can you realistically achieve your goals?

  5. Are they SMART?

  6. How long, realistically, will it take for you to achieve?
