Remote Working
Are you currently living overseas and need to get a job in the UK or another English speaking country because of language restrictions?
Do you want to have a more flexible working life without the 9-5 routine?
Has the pandemic taught you that you would much prefer to have a better work/life balance and remote working seems like the best option?
Do you want to relocate to Dubai on a remote working visa and do some freelance work to sustain you while you are there?
Have you become accustomed to the working from home lifestyle during lockdown and don’t want to have to go back to commuting and sitting in your office all day?
Have you been laid off and not sure what to do with your next career move?
It wasn’t until moving to France 2 years ago that I started to realise the importance of remote working. I had managed satellite teams from Dubai working in Nepal, India & Pakistan but there was a stipulation that we met in person every 3 months so it never really felt so remote. Since Covid came along the concept of remote working is on the tips of so many more tongues and I feel quite ill equipped to advise people on this. So in order to start a conversation about it I have been doing a bit of my own research and it would seem that many people want to know where to find remote work but have no idea where to find it.
I have spent some time looking at different sites and checking for various positions mainly in countries that I’m most commonly associated with and ones which I think would most benefit my clients from The UK, Europe and The Middle East. I must say however that I have never personally got a job from one of these sites and I haven’t found anyone else who has. That, I suspect, is more to do with the shift in traditional working customs we’re experiencing at the moment, than anything else. I’m hoping that having a good list of potential remote working sites will help with this shift and perhaps we can carry on this discussion as time goes by and we start to really use them for recruitment purposes.
There are different types of Remote work to be aware of when looking for a position:
1. Freelance – Contract work;
2. Remote (WFH) i.e Working from home but able to be in the office when needs be;
3. Remote – can work from anywhere in the world;
4. Flexible – flexible on location, working hours/ days etc
There are Freelancer sites which have been around for a long time but it feels like these have been reserved, in the past, for freelance writers and digital tech positions. I have been informed by one source that they often pay under the going rate for some jobs but I think that needs to be investigated more fully. These are:
Freelance services / Contract Based. Blogs, Design Services and much more on here. I found it a little bit difficult to see where to register and look at jobs though.
Contract only. Gig style jobs in Graphic Design, Tech, Marketing & Sales, Legal & Writing for example.
A huge freelance marketplace – used by Dropbox, Airbnb & Microsoft. It is one of the most well-known of the freelancer sites from what I can see and thus competition is higher. I did actually see several positions on here that I would personally apply for so I see that as a positive sign for people who are not in traditional freelance fields.

- Loads of tech and product development/ management roles.
- Lots of global names on here! Amazon, Stripe, Easy Jet etc.
- Mainly Tech positions however.
- Led me directly to a position via Upwork.
- Seems to be quite well connected to other sites so definitely worth a look.
- Lots of recent positions in all fields but does display positions you might find on other sites.
